Chaplain Witnesses Defenseless Inmate Beaten by Deputies in LA County Jail

In 2009, Chaplain Paulino Juarez witnessed
several Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputies beat a defenseless inmate for three minutes in
an LA County Jail. Chaplain Juarez now speaking: “I hear somebody was screaming and I see these
three Deputies… beating this person an African American man. And ah I’m sorry…They
were punching him, I never saw his hands because those rows always the inmates have handcuffs. I never
see his hands trying to protect himself. He just was saying ‘Stop. Please stop! Stop! I did
nothing wrong’. And then because of the punches he fell and I hear a smack. One of the Deputies
he came and he was on his back and he was punching him on the neck and face and then
he stopped. And they started kicking him again and then this Deputy he just moved and he
saw me when I was walking.. but I was just afraid. I leave, but when I leave… I see the body on the floor his head
and shoulders covered in blood. I was shaking I was sad I was upset. I just walked through
the Deputies. They were looking at me like I feel fear. I walked between them. I met
Sergeant who was coming in and I told him I think some of your guys are in big trouble
now.” The ACLU is asking for a Federal Investigation of the LA County Jail System. To Join Us Go To: www.aclu.org/lajails
