REPORTER: JEFF AND CRYSTAL TONIGHT I WANT TO MAKE IT CLEAR THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE THAT WERE OUT HERE TO SUPPORT THE TEMPORARY SHELTER BUT THEY SAY IT MAKES GOOD FINANCIAL SENSE BUT STILL DOZENS OF OTHERS COULDN’T DISAGREE MORE AND TONIGHT THINGS GOT HEATED OUT HERE. WHEN DOZENS GATHERED IN FRONT OF THE NEWPORT BEACH CITY HALL TO PROTEST THE PROPOSED SITE FOR THE HOMELESS SHELTER PUSH CAME TO SHOVE. MANY SAY THE PROPOSED SITE NEAR GARBAGE TRANSFER STATION AT CITY PUBLICS WORKS YARD FEET FROM WEST ACOSTA MESA WOULD TURN THE AREA INTO ANOTHER SKID ROW. MANY SAY THE 40 BED SHELTER WOULD NOT HAVE TO BE BUILT FOR ZONING AND DEVELOPMENT ARE CRIMES BECAUSE THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH DECLARED A HOMELESS CRISIS LAST MONTH THAT MANY ARGUE THAT MEANS IT’S GOING TO BE FAST-TRACKED A THEY SAY IN THE CITY OF 86,00064 HOMELESS PEOPLE DON’T CONSTITUTE A CRISIS. THE CITY IS CALLING THIS A CRISIS WHERE THEY CAN BYPASS THE ZONING PROCESS AND GO THROUGH MEDIA DEVELOPMENT WITHOUT DUE PROCESS. I HAD PEOPLE COMING TO WORK WHO WOULD NOT STOP THE TRANSPORTATION AREA. THEY WERE 15 TENTS AND 25 PEOPLE SITTING THERE FOR SIX MONTHS THEY WEREN’T ABLE TO GET EXTRACTED OUT THERE CAUSING ME HARM AND CAUSING MY BUSINESS HARM AND THEY ARE TELLING ME IT’S NOT A CRISIS? YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS YOU DON’T LIVE HERE.
