Hamilton College Hosts Lecture on New Refugee Policy

3 ((THOMAS))HAMILTON COLLEGE HELD A LECTURE TITLED REFUGEE POLICY IN THE OBAMA AND TRUMP ADMINSITRATION IN RESPONSE TO THE NEW REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT PLAN OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. THE MEETING FOCUSED ON HOW IT WILL AFFECT THE COUNTRY ON A NATIONAL LEVEL AND WHAT THIS COULD MEAN FOR MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY. EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER JAZZMYN ALLEN HAS MORE. 3 LAST WEEK THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE CUTTING THE AMOUNT OF REFUGEES ALLOWED TO ENTER THE U.S. EACH YEAR FROM 30,000 TO 18,000. THIS IS A STAGGERING DIFFERENCE FROM THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION THAT ACCEPTED NEARLY 85,000 REFUGEES TO THE U.S. BEFORE LEAVING OFFICE. HAMILTON COLLGE HELD A LECTURE ADDRESSING THE NEW POLICY. 3 THIS MEANS THAT SOME OF THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT RESETTLE REFUGEES FROM ACROSS THE U.S. WILL NOW HAVE TO SHUT DOWN, CLOSE THEIR DOORS, TURN AWAY THEIR VOLUNTEERS. AND THIS IS REALLY, I BELIEVE, A MISTAKE AND IT’S ALSO BETRAYL OF AMERICAN TRADITION OF HOSTING REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS, WELCOMING THEM TO BECOME AMERICANS. OVER THE LAST 38 YEARS, 16,000 REFUGEES HAVE BEEN RESETTLED TO THE CITY OF UTICA FROM 36 COUNTRIES AND SPEAKING OVER 40 LANGUAGES. AROUND 800 PEOPLE RECEIVE CITIZENSHIP EACH YEAR. MANY REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS ARE CONTRIBUTED WITH RENOVATING AND REBUILDING UTICA WHEN THE CITY FACED A MAJOR DECLINE IN THE POPULATION DURING THE 1980’S AND 1990’S. REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT IS ECONOMIC REVITALIZATION AND INCREASES THE COMMUNITY’S VALUE. ALTHOUGH THE CUT IN REFUGEES ALLOWED TO ENTER THE U.S. IS A NATIONAL POLICY, IT WILL DIRECTLY AFFECT PEOPLE ON A LOCAL LEVEL. FOREIGN POLICY CAN BE COMPLICATED BUT THIS IS A VERY VERY IMPORTANT LIFE SAVING PROGRAM SO WE’D LIKE TO KEEP PEOPLE AWARE OF WHAT’S GOING ON AND IF THEY CAN, ENCOURAGE THEM TO SPEAK UP TO THEIR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. SPEAK UP TO THEIR SENATORS AND SAY HEY WE’RE A NATION OF REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANTS WE SHOULD BE BRINGING MORE PEOPLE HERE NOW, NOT LESS. REPORTING IN CLINTON, JAZZMYN ALLEN EYEWITNESS NEWS 3 ((THOMAS))ONE HOUSE FIRE IN UTICA STOPPED TRAFFIC ALONG ONEIDA STREET THIS MORNING. IT HAPPENED RIGHT AROUND 10:30
