Homeless Shelter Inspections

Homeless Shelter Inspections

HAS SIX MONTHS TO INDICT. ONE OF THE SUSPECTS IS STILL BEHIND BARS FOR AN UNRELATED ASSAULT CHARGE. THERE’S A NEW PLAN ON THE TABLE TO MAKE HOMELESS SHELTERS AROUND THE CITY SAFER AND MORE APPEALING. IT COMES AS CITY LEADERS ARE TRAINED TO FULFILL GOVERNOR CUOMO’S NEWMAN DATE FOR SHELTERS. CBS 2’S MARCIA KRAMER HAS THE STORY. Reporter: THIS IS WHAT GOVERNOR CUOMO DOESN’T WANT TO SEE HOMELESS PEOPLE WHO WOULD RATHER BRAVE BONE-CHILLING TEMPERATURES THAN GO TO A SHELTER BECAUSE THEY ARE DIRTY OR DANGEROUS. WE THANK HIM VERY MUCH. Reporter: IT’S WHY HE JUST ASKED CITY CONTROLLER SCOTT STRINGER TO ACCEPT A NEW JOB INSPECTING AND OVERSEEING SAFETY AND CLEANLINESS. STRINGER IS WASTING NO TIME. WE HAVE ESTABLISHED A WAR ROOM. I’M VERY SERIOUS ABOUT DOING A HOLISTIC AND TRANSPARENT APPROACH TO MONITORING AND AUDITING THE SHELTERS. Reporter: THE CONTROLLER HAS ALREADY DONE ONE AUDIT THAT FOUND HORRIFYING AND DANGEROUS CONDITIONS IN 90% OF FAMILY SHELTERS AND APARTMENTS FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES. RAT INFESTATION, DANGEROUS LIVING CONDITIONS, HAVE NO PLACE IN A SHELTER SYSTEM WHERE 23,000 CHILDREN SLEEP. Reporter: HE HAS ACCEPTED GOVERNOR CUOMO’S ASSIGNMENT TO — CONTINUE TO HOLD THE CITY’S FEET TO THE FIRE. I INTEND TO BE AGGRESSIVE. YOU HAVE TO WORK WITH THE ADMINISTRATION WYLER’ HOLDING THE ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTABLE. Reporter: ROBERT MASS SEIKALY A FORMER DEPUTY COMMISSIONER IN THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELESS SERVICES HAS A NEW IDEA FOR FIXING THE SHELTERS. PAYING THE HOMELESS TO HELP CLEAN THEM. I THINK IT’S TIME TO START THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX. LET’S GET THESE PEOPLE ON BOARD RIGHT AWAY, PAY THEM SOME MONEY, GET THEM WORKING, BECAUSE THE MAINTENANCE STAFFS IN THESE SHELTERS ARE USUALLY WOEFULLY INADEQUATE. Reporter: THE CITY SAYS IT MIGHT CONSIDER IT. WE ARE LOOKING AT ALL OPTIONS FOR JOB TRAINING AND SHELTER ASSISTANCE, SAID MAYOR DE BLASIO’S PRESS SECRETARY, KAREN HINTON. THE ADMINISTRATION IS WORKING AGGRESSIVELY TO INSPECT AND REPAIR SHELTERS, BUT MANY OF THE NEEDED REPAIRS REQUIRE PROFESSIONAL CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS. PUTTING SHELTER RESIDENTS TO WORK WILL GET THEM INVESTED UNTIL THE PLACE THEY ARE STAYING. THEY WILL BE UPSET IF THEY SEE ANOTHER SHELTER RESIDENT THROWING SOMETHING ON THE FLOOR. I HAVE TO CLEAN THAT UP, DON’T BE DOING THAT. Reporter: THE CITY IS TRYING TO DEVELOP A PROGRAM TO ESPECIALLY HAD THE HOMELESS TO DEVELOP THE JOB SKILLS NECESSARY TO BE SELF- SUFFICIENT.

  1. the   dirty shelter and the ones that not helping people get house should be miornted or closed

  2. may be the people that are living in the shelters can get paid to clean them, keep them safe, etc… if it is their temporary/permanent home they may treat it different. they can weed out the garbage and keep those that are willing to change.
